This week I want to share about something deeply personal and universally challenging: starting over. Whether you’re beginning a new ministry or you’re birthing a new idea, fear and uncertainty can be overwhelming. As someone who has recently “launched out into the deep” and launched a new podcast, "The Evolution of Me," dedicated to empowering Female Christian leaders, I had to confront my own anxieties and doubts that come with such a significant shift with “starting over”.
"Whether you’re beginning a new ministry or you’re birthing a new idea, fear and uncertainty can be overwhelming.'
In this blog post, I wanted to address the fears and share some clear strategies that will help you build your confidence in starting over, ensuring success in everything the Lord has placed before you to do.
The Fear of Failure
One of the most paralyzing fears when starting over is the fear of failure. What if I don't succeed? What if all my efforts amount to nothing? These questions can create a crippling self-doubt and a fear of moving forward.
Strategies to Overcome the Fear of Failure
Here are some things you can do to confront the fear of failure.
1. Redefine Failure: Shift your perspective on failure. Instead of viewing it as a setback, see it as a valuable learning experience. Every time we “fail”, teaches us something new and brings us closer to our goals. And what looks like failure to us, may look like success to someone else. Just the fact that you are beginning, may look like success to someone else who is still thinking about starting again.
2. Set Realistic Goals: Break down your overarching vision into smaller, achievable goals. Celebrate each milestone, no matter how small, to build momentum and confidence. With each small step that you take, gets you closer to meeting that goal.
As the bible states, don’t despise the days of small beginnings (paraphrased Zechariah 4:10). Each day, take a step towards your goal. As I prepared to launch my podcast, I took small but deliberate steps toward building my platform, choosing a podcast host (and yes, I watched A LOT of Youtube videos comparing services), reaching out to my email list, and doing the small but necessary tweaks to episode ideas and even finding the courage to do some FB Lives for marketing. Every step takes you closer to your goal.
3. Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network. Friends, mentors, and accountability partners can provide encouragement and constructive feedback, helping you stay on track. For me, I reached out to friends and asked them to be ambassadors for my podcast. Just knowing that they will keep me covered in prayer will do a lot for my confidence.
The Fear of the Unknown
Uncertainty about what lies ahead can create anxiety, making it difficult to take the first step. This fear is especially common when transitioning to a new career or ministry path. Remember these key strategies when you are facing the unknown.
Stay open to change and be ready to adapt as needed. Flexibility can turn uncertainties into opportunities for growth and innovation.
Strategies to Overcome the Fear of the Unknown
1. Research and Prepare: Equip yourself with as much information as possible about your new venture. Understanding the landscape can reduce uncertainty and build confidence. I’ve been listening to podcast for years and always had a dream that I would someday have one. But I have to prepare for the work of building my podcast platform. I researched other podcasts. I studied various trailer designs. I studied numerous covers and layouts and like I mentioned before, studied numerous hosting companies on Youtube. Doing the research, and studying the industry…helps a lot. Another key thing I did for preparation was I took TWO podcast courses that helped me learns the ins and outs of the industry.
2. Embrace Flexibility: Stay open to change and be ready to adapt as needed. Flexibility can turn uncertainties into opportunities for growth and innovation. This is so important when you have an idea and as you work, the need to tweak or change that idea becomes needed. As you birth the idea and that idea grows, you have to remain flexible.
Sometimes you will need to shift and build on that initial idea. As a result, that “seed of an idea” has grown into something bigger and better. Be open. You never know where the Lord is leading you or whose life you will impact because you were flexible and shifted as needed.
3. Faith and Trust: Lean on your faith, trusting that God has a plan for you. Taking the time to pray and find clarity on starting over will help alleviate the stress of starting over. Beginning again can be frightening but trusting God to lead you will make the difference. Find some quality time and meditate on His promises. God has promised to bless the work of your hands. So trust Him to do exactly that as you start over. When you find yourself in a place of trusting God, you’ll find peace and clarity in times of uncertainty.
